Becoming Jane (2007) dvd

February 2nd, 2008 by admin

Like Molière, which was released in theaters around the same time, Becoming Jane isn’t a conventional biopic. Instead, Julian Jarrold (White Teeth) expands on events from Jane Austen’s life that may have shaped her fiction. To his credit, he doesn’t stray too far from the facts. In 1795, 20-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway with believable British accent) is an aspiring author. Her parents (Julie Walters and James Cromwell) married for love, and money is tight. They hope to see their youngest daughter make a more lucrative match, and there’s a besotted local, Read More »

Damages: The Complete First Season dvd

January 28th, 2008 by admin

One of the biggest treats of the 2007 television season was “Damages,” a wicked and wonderful legal thriller from FX. Headlined by Glenn Close, I expected to enjoy this show–but I wasn’t prepared for the level of sophistication, complexity, and intelligence it offered up from its first twisty, and twisted, moments. Made for adults, this drama demands attention Read More »

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

January 28th, 2008 by admin

The King of Kong is possibly the best movie I saw during 2007 (and I saw alot of movies). What makes it outstanding is that it’s a simple story of good against evil played out between normal guys (maybe even less than normal when you factor in the Geek Quotient) and it’s 100% true!

I won’t spoil things but any fan of wrestling, Read More »

Battlestar Galactica - Season Three dvd

January 25th, 2008 by admin

see more pics here Some of the best writing in TV is in Battlestar Galactica. As well as some of the best acting.

All seasons have been great, but this one is particularly excellent - the characters and the people are truly struggling and striving to survive. Not a season of space battles, like the previous ones, but a season of introspection and character development. As well as a fair number of plot twists and “Whoa! I didn’t see that coming!” moments.

I am constantly amazed at the depth of the writing in this series. It is filled with creative and complicated plot lines; Read More »
