Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

February 4th, 2008 by admin

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and IndonesiaThis beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls Anne Lamotts hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans. The Pillars of the Earth (Deluxe Edition) (Oprah’s Book Club) (Paperback)

I’ve never been a fan of Follett, and picked this book up with some misgivings - anyone these days can try to do an “historical” novel with some quick sex, some fake archaic new-speak, and a TV-movie-miniseries concept of history. While there are some minor flaws in this book, its sweep, characterization, tensions, and love of its subject are simply riveting. I could not put the darned thing down and have lost sleep for a week compulsively page-turning. Follett, unbelievably, seems to have made little splash with this book when it first came out - more shame to the critics Read More »

Duma Key: A Novel (Hardcover)

January 28th, 2008 by admin

This is one of the best books ever from one of the best American writers. Stephen King knows what scares us, and he’s been proving it for thirty years, but this new novel adds a layer of humanity to the fantasy that makes it all the more surprising. Though the protagonist of DUMA KEY is ostensibly a divorced construction engineer with a latent talent for drawing, he is also clearly a stand-in for the author himself, making this arguably his most personal narrative. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) (Hardcover)

This is arguably the most “hyped” book in history, and if J.K. Rowling had to sneak down to the kitchen for a glass of red wine to calm her nerves while writing The Goblet of Fire (as she said she did), one wonders what assuaged her while writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The collective breath of tens of millions of readers has been held for two years…and now…was it worth the wait? Did Ms. Rowling live up to the hype? Read More »

Eat This Not That !

This is a great book. Slick and attractive, with fantastic full-color pictures. Very well researched too, which is expected coming from the folks behind one of the most densely-packed, informative magazines, Men’s Health.

The truth is that casual dining restaurants have higher calorie meals than the much-maligned fast food joints. Read More »

The Appeal (Hardcover)

see more pics hereThe jury was ready. After forty-two hours of deliberations that followed seventy-one days of trial that included 530 hours of testimony from four dozen witnesses, and after a lifetime of sitting silently as the lawyers haggled and the judge lectured and the spectators watched like hawks for telltale signs, the jury was ready. Locked away in the jury room, secluded and secure, ten of them proudly signed their names to the verdict while the other two pouted in their corners, detached and miserable in their Read More »
